Boston Inspiring Connections Outdoors

Bringing kids outdoors since 1994

Get Involved: Overview

Volunteers with Boston Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) enjoy being outdoors and spending time with youth. They include students and professionals from all walks of life, spanning a broad age range. No special outdoor skills are required, just the desire to share your love of the outdoors with Boston's urban youth. Some of our volunteers go on to become leaders for our program. In order to ensure safe, high-quality programs, ICO has adopted comprehensive leader standards. For individuals who want to take the next step from volunteer to leader, Boston ICO provides the necessary training and support.

There are many ways to get involved and have a meaningful impact on the Boston ICO group and the kids we serve. We do ask that all interested volunteers attend an orientation. See the Calendar for the next ICO meeting, or email [email protected] for more information about getting involved, especially with steering committee and fundraising positions.

Volunteer on Trips

Trip Volunteers go on trips with the kids under the leadership of a more experienced ICO volunteer who is a Certified Outdoor Leader. A typical day trip is about 8 hours. Trips are organized about once a month, on Saturday or Sunday. You will be reimbursed for all out-of-pocket expenses. We only ask for your time and your commitment to the program. Volunteers should complete a Volunteer Application and Code of Ethics agreement available on our Resources page, and attend a new volunteer orientation. See On-Trail Roles for more information.

Lead Trips

Certified Outdoor Leaders work with agencies and the Boston ICO steering committee to plan and lead our Boston ICO trips. We have a program to train volunteers to fill this role. See On-Trail Roles for more information.

Serve as an Agency Liaison

Act as a contact person between Boston ICO and the youth agencies we partner with. See Off-Trail Roles for more information. NOTE: We are currently looking to partner with a new youth agency. Please email [email protected] if you have suggestions.

Serve on the Steering Committee

Our trips can?t happen without the dedicated support of our critical off-trail volunteers. Many of our Steering Committee positions are opening to new volunteers, please contact us if interested. Steering Committee roles include: Chair, Vice Chair, Volunteer Coordinator, Treasurer, Fundraising Chair, and Communications Coordinator.

Help with Fundraising

Though the trips are no cost to agencies, kids, and volunteers, we do incur expenses. Help us plan our annual BrewFest beer event and/or wine tasting, or lend your skills and knowledge to grant writing.

We can't do what we do without financial contributions from individuals. Even $25 goes a long way. See Donate for examples of how your tax-deductible contribution allows us to bring kids outdoors.
