Testimonials about Boston Inner City Outings

I am happy to hear that the Cape trip went well. The students can’t stop talking about it. I just want to say thank you to the ICO volunteers for the work that you guys do to make these inner city teens see and experience that there is more to this world than what they see and experience in their communities, and also to teach them leadership, team building skills and to appreciate and take of our beautiful nature.

God Bless You All,

Paulo DeBarros

"We found a bright red salamander and it crawled on my arm!"

The last trip I went on with Sierra Club is when we did some canoeing down what I think was the Connecticut River. I had a wonderful time! Where we ate lunch was a beautiful hill! I loved every second of that day. I hope I would have another chance like that again!

"I thought for sure I wasn't going to make it up the mountain-- and then I did."

-Participant, Age 12

One of my most memorable Sierra Club Outings was going whitewater rafting. The reason why I liked it was because the feeling of being the suits and being in the rafts was exciting. I think that the outings are a good way of having inner city youth experience the outdoors. Sometimes being in a crowded city gets hectic and going somewhere where there are trees and it's fresh is a good thing. The Sierra Club should keep giving youth the opportunity to go and explore what's outside the city.

"No one I know has ever been on snowshoes before."

Thank you for our trip on Saturday to Wachusett Mt. We have enjoyed our entire day there. We appreciate everything you've done for us so far, and making an effort spending time with us.

Signed and loved,

"Climbing that mountain was something I never thought I could do in a million years!"

I want to let you know that I was honored to be able to come along and join in your exploration of Lynn Woods with Boston ICO on Sunday, 11/14/2010. I was very impressed by the kids, their curiosity, their willingness to experience new things-- from dark wet caves to wintergreen-- and their friendly, welcoming, and open support of each other. It is a testament to their parents, teachers, and those of you working with them outside of school, and the students themselves that they come together so well and willingly to explore and absorb the rich experiences offered to them by the natural world on such an outing, while simultaneously growing through the personal relationships they develop and clearly enrich during the day. I was struck a number of times during the day by the degree of care and support the students showed towards each other, a sharp contrast to the bullying and disrespect one hears about so often these days. I was also glad to see their high level of intrepidness when encountering new challenges and situations, even when preceded by exclamations of disgust or uncertainty.
